Windows Media Player

Windows Media Set up:

We have found that if you have XP as your operating system and the latest version of Windows Media Player, you can search and fast forward the archived files...UPGRADE if you can!  Also, we have a new server that displays all current semester archived files: http://classarchives.mst.edu ,  here you can access all your class files, and we found that it also allows you to search if you haven't been able to in the past.

The classes are live-streamed and archived using Windows Media Producer. The Windows Media Player is normally a part of the Windows Programs that came with your PC. Go to the start menu, you should find it under accessories.  Windows media player 9 is the most current version, and what you should be upgraded to.

Using Internet Explorer, click on the live internet link. If the Windows Media link does not work, you may need to upgrade your Windows Media Player. Click the upgrade link on the player. It will take you to the download center web site. Follow the instructions for the type of operating system you are using on your computer.

When upgrading, you may need to delete the old Windows Media Player, before you download the upgrade.  If you do not have administrative rights on the computer that you will be using for class, you may need to contact your support personnel at your site to do this for you.

If you are inside a firewall, you will need to configure the proxy server in Windows Media Options. Under Protocols choose HTTP only or contact your site technician to receive instructions on how to do this.

Windows Media Frequently Asked Questions

1.Q. I've tried to connect to the Windows Media live stream, but it just keeps buffering at the bottom of the screen. I never get sound or picture, but when I check my connection, I have data coming in, but no results.

1.A. Windows Media takes a while to connect. The problem could be your modem speed. We encode the Windows Media files at a single (150 kbs) modem speed.

2.Q. I just tried to watch my class using Windows Media Player. I typed the address for the live file, but I got an error message saying "The request could not be understood by the server."

2.A. Use Internet Explorer to access the links. Netscape will not work.

Also, check the time of day for the class file you were trying to link to. Classes are live streamed only when the class is actually meeting. All times are listed as Central Time.

3.Q. Do I have to open Windows Media Player to view a class file?

3.A. You can open the file either from Windows Media Player or from Internet Explorer, try both.
