VIDEO PRODUCTION FOR TEACHING

The VCC has over 20 years of experience in helping Missouri S&T's faculty use video as a teaching medium. This primarily involves web delivery of graduate coursework to science and engineering professionals in their workplaces. Furthermore, VCC distance classrooms are Missouri S&T's connection to MOREnet, (Missouri Research and Education Network), providing Internet connectivity, access to Internet2, technical support, videoconferencing services and coursework to Missouri's K-12 schools, colleges and universities, public libraries, health care, state government and other affiliated organizations.

Distance education via the video medium, far from being a rigid and constraining teaching environment, offers options that can be tailored to the instructor, the subject and the students.

  • Delivery system choices — Internet, two-way videoconferencing, and DVD/CD/tape (including overseas formats).
  • Type of coursework choices — full semester, certification program, short course or seminar.
  • Presentation choices for the instructor — from "chalk-and-talk" to overheads, slides and printed materials to any computer program, collaborative software, Smartboard technology and picture-in-picture television techniques.
  • Location choices — Instructors at Missouri S&T, instructors on other campuses and at business locations can be linked interactively with students at other universities, business facilities and community telecommunications centers.
  • Videos covering experiments, demonstrations, guest speakers and field trips can be produced to augment classroom instruction.
  • In the event of an unavoidable absence, an instructor can pre-record or post-record lectures for showing during class time.

VIDEO PRODUCTION FOR INSTRUCTION and PRESENTATION

Regardless of whether the final product is a tape, a CD / DVD, or video for the Web, the VCC covers all aspects of the production of a video program. This typically includes in-studio or on-location shooting, graphics, limited editing, mastering, and duplication or format conversions.

These videos are usually incorporated into an academic course, a certification program or departmental training to demonstrate a procedure, showcase an expert, or describe a place or process.

The VCC can assist in all aspects of production such as the preparation of scripts, storyboards, graphic design, animations and the other elements that are required to make video presentations exciting, informative, and effective.

After the video has reached its final form in terms of content, the VCC offers a variety of choices for the means of distribution.

CD-ROM and DVD  media allow video to be played on a computer or appropriate player connected to a TV.

Web-based video allows anyone with a networked computer to access media.  The VCC not only can produce the video, but provide the hosting service for web access.

TELECONFERENCING

Just as fax machines, voice mail, email and web pages have become common business and educational communications tools, so video teleconferencing is now an expected collaboration tool in the business world and the world of academia. Faculty and departments on the Missouri S&T campus use video teleconferencing through the VCC facilities for a variety of purposes.

  • Research . Faculty involved in a research project with another university or national laboratory meet via video teleconferencing to show results and plan further efforts.
  • Multi-campus administrative units .   Campus units having counterparts on the other campuses of the UM system meet to coordinate procedures and policies.
  • Student organizations .   Student-led groups of the University of Missouri System use video teleconferencing to discuss student issues.
Student recruitment .  Faculty and admissions staffs use video teleconferencing to conduct an "open house" meetings with prospective  Missouri S&T  students attending community colleges.
